Why Develop a Strategic Plan?

Developing a strategic plan for your organization is critical for success.  Preparation of this plan will allow your organization to remain on target and clearly communicate your message to your supporters.

It will also keep your managers from becoming so preoccupied with immediate issues that they lose sight of the organizations ultimate objectives.

A strategic plan is especially important to those in the non profit realm - i.e. those dependent upon donors for support.  Without a clear path of travel, people will have a difficult time buying into your mission and financially supporting your goals.

Developing a realistic and attainable plan will allow your managers to think strategically and act operationally.

An acceptable strategic plan should:

  • Serve as the basis for decision-making.  Approval or disapproval of new projects should be based upon your strategic plan.

  • Provide a framework for more detailed planning.  A strategic plan is visionary, conceptual and directional.  It is broad in scope but it should provide clear direction for future planning and development.

  • Clearly communicate the organization's mission and goals to others.  The strategic plan should provide enough information to motivate people to become more involved with your organization.  The details can be explained later.

  • Allow for forward motion.  A strategic plan should be reviewed regularly to determine future success opportunities.  Planning will provide benchmarks and allow for a historical review.  This information will serve as a stimulus for change and help to facilitate future planning.
